Damn you, Indecision!

Podcast Rating on iPods

There’s a way to rate your songs on your iPod, but that doesn’t extend to podcasts for some reason. I know podcasts are kind of meant to be transitory, just something you listen to and then delete to clear out space on your HD (podcast storage can balloon really fast!) for newer content. However, I wish that you could rate podcasts on your iPod or any other mp3 player, so you could kind of mark the ones you’d like to keep and listen to again. Also, for podcasts from a provider like Indiefeed, they put out podcasts that are just one music track with an intro and some background info after the track is over. For those types of ‘casts especially, ratings would be helpful, so I can weed out the tracks I didn’t like.

What would be even more interesting is if the iPod/insert-mp3-player-here podcast ratings could be translated into a rating on a website, like Digg, where you can Digg individual episodes of a podcast, or some other podcast portal sites. It could get out of hand, where people try to game the system and popularize their favorite podcasts artificially, but I think it could be interesting to see which particular episodes for a podcast are well-received or not. And being able to rate podcasts straight from your mp3 player would make doing that stuff easier. Ratings info from your iPod already get synced into iTunes, so it might not be too difficult to pass that info along to a website (opt-in, of course).

Anyway. I’m just thinking out loud. I mainly just want a way to mark podcasts from my iPod that I want to keep around, like episode 33 of MacBreak Weekly, that I just blogged about. 🙂 Of course, I have other requests, like being able to delete tracks directly from my iPod; or being able to rearrange tracks for an on-the-go playlist on the iPod, like if I want to move up a track after the on-the-go playlist has already been created. But that’s a whole other story…

  1. Hey there, Chris from IndieFeed. I couldn’t agree with you more. Because our selection is always varied, different tastes and all that, it should be easier for people to customize and filter at will. We are looking into a rating system for the website but that of course does not give you what you are looking for. But it sure would help us to figure what people like and dont 🙂 thanks for the feedback! Chris
